The Biografie of Bernard Leemker (1899-1990)
Bernard Leemker (Groningen 1899-1990 The Hague) trained himself as a painter, illustrator and commercial artist. Like many painters, he made a living through illustration and commissioned work. With a witty undertone he drew all kinds of scenes that were used for calendars, posters, books and advertising materials. In his free work, Spanish culture, billiard players and clowns, for example, were often the subjects. He also painted landscapes and river landscapes. Inspired by the painters Piet van der Hem and Willy Sluiter, he developed his own characteristic style with also a fast drawing hand. Like them, he went to Volendam to paint the fishermen's life there. This work was made on one of his trips to Zeeland. The use of color and cheerfulness was typical of his style.
