Appel is a sculptor, graphic artist and ceramicist; he choreographed a ballet and made sets, but above all Karel Appel is the painter who is world famous with Corneille and Constant, whom he already knew from the Academy. At the beginning of his career, he was a founder in 1948 and then involved for two years in the Cobra movement, which, in addition to artists from Amsterdam, also included Belgians and Danes. His work is full of primary colors and is graphic in style. His study of children's drawings inspired his characteristic style. 'Suddenly I found it (at night) – I am now making a more powerful primitive work'. And he added: 'More powerful than Picasso. From his visit to Paris with Corneille, Appel has been making grotesque human and animal figures with large areas of color in bright colours. Contour lines and smaller shapes provide accents. Appel's early exuberant, playful and humorous Cobra work expresses the unbridled energy with which the artist painted. He worked quickly and directly, almost brutally, from the heart and emotion without an end result in mind. If you had to characterize Appel's painting style, the term 'expressionist' seems obvious, given the simple shapes, the bright use of color and the thick blobs of paint.
Chicken nuggets with homemade fries and mayonnaise, ketchup and apple sauce is the dish that comes to mind. Childishly simple. But if made very well, a fantastic dish. Serve with cucumber, blueberries and all colors of the dishes to bring back the primary colors of Apple. Don't forget the dollops of mayonnaise and ketchup.
