Biography Pol Dom
Paul (Pol) Dom (Antwerpen 1885 - Den Haag 1978) was born in Antwerp. After his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, he went to the painting village of Laren in the Netherlands in 1909. He lived in Brussels for another three years with his wife and artist Betsy van Gelder before settling in The Hague for good with his daughter. In 1936 Pol Dom also took Dutch nationality. He was a member of Pulchri Studio and the Haagse Kunstkring and exhibited there frequently. In addition, his work was shown at exhibitions in Amsterdam (St. Lucas), The World Exhibitions of Paris (1937) and New York (1939) and further in Barcelona, Venice, Toronto (1940) and Buenos Aires. Dom was inspired by a variety of materials and subjects. In addition to being a painter, he was above all a draftsman and graphic artist and earned his living as a cartoonist for the Haagse Courant and for children's books, including Kruimeltje by Chris van Abcoude and De Schippers van de Kameleon by Hotze de Roos.
