Biography Jan Hoynck van Papendrecht 

Jan Hoynck van Papendrecht (1858-1933) was born with drawing and painting; his father John Cornelis was an accomplished draftsman and painter. After the patrician Hoynck van Papendrecht had successfully completed the Trade School in Amsterdam, he enrolled, at the insistence of Charles Rochussen, for the winter course of the renowned Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Antwerp. After two years in Antwerp he continued his studies in Munich for another four years. After this he returned to Amsterdam. In 1889 he married the pastor's daughter Johanna Philippa van Gorkom. In 1894 they left for Rheden near Arnhem where they stayed until 1902. The last place of residence was The Hague, where Hoynck van Papendrecht would live until his death.

He was particularly fascinated by the picturesque elements of military life, the colorful uniforms and, above all, horses; despite the fact that he himself has not been in military service. The common thread in the extensive oeuvre is his work as an illustrator for the English magazine "The Graphic", "Eigen Haard", “Elsevier” and a series of books about the Horse Artillery Corps “de Gele Rijders”. Hoynck van Papendrecht is best known as a painter of military life. He understood the art of capturing large groups of people in a balanced composition. Until well into the 19th century, patriotism and heroism played a major role in Dutch military paintings, which increasingly focused on the everyday life of soldiers Leading painters of this innovative direction in Dutch painting were the young painters Isaac Israëls, George Hendrik Breitner, but especially Hoynck van Papendrecht, who, as a true illustrator, paid attention to the details and wanted to paint less impressionistically and therefore really had his own style. .

He also made hundreds of watercolors and many oil paintings; also of landscapes and various portraits. During his life, Hoynck van Papendrecht achieved fame at home and abroad, including the Willink van Collen Prize (1885) and an honorable mention at the "Salon de Paris" in 1907.
