Co Cordèl (Bolsward, 1957), the pseudonym of Epko Terpstra, began his artistic career in the 1980s with traditional, nostalgic still-life paintings. As his style evolved, he expanded his focus to include diverse compositions featuring subjects such as shop windows, harbors, human figures, and aquariums. Cordèl distinguishes himself through his pursuit of authenticity; he strives not to create perfect pictures but rather art that resonates and captivates.
Cordèl studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rotterdam, where he honed his skills as a painter, sculptor, and graphic artist. His work is characterized by expressive forms and a profound sense of color and texture. He often works with natural materials such as wood, clay, and bronze, crafting organic and sometimes abstract sculptures. His paintings weave together personal experiences and universal themes like nature, transience, and mysticism, giving his work an intense emotional depth.
In the 1970s and 1980s, Cordèl established a strong reputation in the Netherlands, exhibiting in prominent galleries and participating in group exhibitions. His work seamlessly transitions between figurative and abstract styles, reflecting influences from both expressionism and surrealism. This artistic versatility earned him international recognition, with exhibitions in countries such as Germany, France, and Italy.
Cordèl combines his artistic practice with a passion for education, teaching at various art academies and inspiring young talent with his expertise and creative vision. Since 1980, he and his wife Jolanda, who is also an artist, have been running an art clinic from their home in Gorredijk. Here, they regularly organize exhibitions and provide a space for creativity and artistic exchange.
