Van 't Hoff was a versatile artist who made paintings, water colors, drawings and used etching techniques. He learned these techniques at the Academie van de Beeldende Kunsten in his place of birth The Haque. He travelled Europe where he was inspired by the Art Nouveau and the Jugendstil. This lake view in Italy was painted during one of his journeys. He liked to paint birds and fishes and was in Artis many times. Beside painter he was a graphic teacher. In The Haque he was part of the Pulchri Studio's.
